Hi Y'all,
The group has been on hiatus for more than two years now, but regularly I get e-mails from people asking when I plan to start up the group again. Well... my life is still hectic, but I miss book discussions about non-school related readings and the online friendships that kind of went by the way side while I pursued life, love and a master's degree.
For those of you who participated before, I moved to New Jersey (but I still have that Southern accent), shortly before the group went on hiatus to try to decide whether the relationship I had begun long distance could stand up to the stresses of seeing someone more frequently than every two weeks. The goal before I began the relationship had been to go into the Peace Corp and head to places unknown, and experiencing actual rather than virtual literary adventures. Well, he asked me to give a romantic adventure a chance and promised we'd make those actual adventures together once we'd finished school if I chose him.
Well, Jim and I were married last fall and spent a lovely two weeks in England. I have progressed but am still a ways from completing my master's degree. Jim is making much steadier progress on his Ph.D. Hopefully the world will still be there to visit and not a wrecked shambles by the time that we are done.
What Is This Group?
Literary Adventures was a group that read 20th and 21st century literarture from around the globe. We tried not to pick too many selections from any one continent or country, but rather flitted around like birds - a taste of India here, then a nibble of Argentina there, before cooling off in Argentina or sweating it out in Australia's outback. We tried to discuss the selection in terms of the historical/political situation at the time and within its current situation. I attempted to facilitate this by doing newsletters and providing links to sites about the country and a bio of the author.
Book Selection
I would like to discuss one book a month. I believe in democracy, especially when it comes to reading selections and free time, so I will ask for input.
So... whether you participated in the past or are just hanging out looking for people of similar minds, here is what I propose:
- Anyone who is interested, post on the Literary Adventures boards in the New Beginning thread and e-mail me at GypsyReadr@yahoo so that I can know where to send reminders and newsletters.
- We will discuss one book a month.
- No two authors from the same country will be selected within a six month period so that we will have the opportunity to sample more countries and cultures.
- Each month group members will be asked to select a country that they are interested in choosing the next title from. Nominations for potential authors can be made with the country.
- The group will vote on titles and the majority vote will be that month's selection.
- Most discussion will take place on the message boards. If the group is interested in real-time chats, these can be arranged once a month on Sunday nights. At least two people besides myself should be interested in participating in a real-time chat for this to be worthwhile.
- I need a minimum of three individuals to sign up for the group before we can get started. I'd love to get going in April, so post soon.
