Which was your first LaVyrle Spencer book? Which one got you hooked? Is that one still your favorite, or has another one caught your imagination?

My first book was Spring Fancy. I was stuck at my Mom and Dad's house just after my first daughter was born (she was a premie and I was staying with them because they lived closer to the better hospital). My Mom knew I was homesick and depressed and so she bought me this book. That was back in 1986.
I was hooked! Like you Wendy, I went and found as many as possible. Over the years I have bought them all, in hardback whenever possible too. Geez, I can't believe it's been that long! LOL LaVyrle Spencer Group Leader LaVyrle Spencer Message Board LaVyrle Spencer Group Home Page Happy Reading! |

Wow, what a coincidence. My daughter was born in November 1986, and it was after shortly after that I started reading LS.

My First LS Book.... | ||
|
Hey guys!! I'm new here, I love this web site!! I just started reading LS books about a month or so ago, and I was hooked by the second page!! The first book of LS's that I read was Small Town Girl. I loved it!! I didn't think i would since i'm not that big of a fan of country music but I gave it a shot and I'm GLAD i did!! I was surprised though, i read the story out of a Reader's Digest condensed book along with other stories from various authors but once i was finished with Small Town Girl I ran out to the library and got Family Blessings, which was also great!! I just can't get enough!!

Isn't it amazing how LS's books capture your imagination like that! It only takes a few pages and whoops, you are hooked! Small Town Girl is wonderful and Family Blessings is one of my favorites, a close tie with my other favorite, BitterSweet. Keep reading her books and you will be amazed at the depth at which she writes.

LS books are like potato chips. You can't read just one.

I think my first was the one where the girl (Mary?) was in love with two guys. I believe they were brothers. I think they made a movie with Cheryl Ladd. Can anyone tell me the name, I'd like to reread that.

My first LS book was "Twice Loved". I think I was about 16 or so. My mom had been reading her books for years, so I thought I would give it a try. I think I was hooked after that first one, but my perennial favorite remains "Morning Glory". Since then, I have read almost all of her books at least twice... some of my favorites I have read more than 3 times. What can I say... I'm addicted!!!

My first was Bitter Sweet. I'm from northern Wisconsin, and my librarian recommended it to me. It was SOOOO COOL because I could picture all the places she was describing in the book. The phrase "Hey, I've been there!" popped into my head about a million times while reading it. Since then, I went out and bought every single book she wrote. I'm not ashamed to admit I wept when I read that she was retiring. And in response to Jenn, who wanted to know the title of the book about the woman named Mary who was in love with two brothers, that was The Fulfillment. Mary was married to Jonathan, who was sterile, and fell in love with his brother Aaron, who lived with them.

My first book was "That Camden Summer". I too raced out and got my hands on any and every LaVyrle book I could. I'm not happy that LaVyrle decided to retire. But I still have "That Camden Summer".

First and Favorite LS book | ||
|
The first LS book I read was "Morning Glory"....and it is still my all-time favorite book (and I read ALOT!) Others include November of the Heart and The Endearment. The funny thing is that I had read 3 or 4 of her books over about a 4 year period, and never realized they were by the same author. Each of them had been a favorite...to the point that I had remembered the characters' names and storylines specifically (and like I said, I read ALOT!). It was really cool to realize that they were by the same author. I have every book now (I think), and she remains my all-time favorite author. I was sad when she stopped writing, but I understand it. I'm a writer, too, and can only hope to someday tell the heartwarming, in-depth stories of real people with even a fraction of the passion that she conveyed.

I got Bygones as part of a mail order book club...
and then started buying all of her books...at one point..I had them all in paperback lined up in chron. order on my shelf..but when we moved..my hubbie left my box in the "shed" and some of my books got mildewed... BOY WAS HE IN THE DOG HOUSE THEN..but..that's okay...because now they are being reprinted with new covers so I am just updating them..they were dog eared and worn out anyhow... Sweet Memories is my favorite story overall..with "Brian" & "Jo Jo" from Spring Fancy tying for favorite "hero"..but I relate "Allison" from A Heart Speaks and "Theresa" from S.M. for fav "heroines" I think they should ALL be made into Movies..and I also wish LaVyrle had a website/email addy... |
